What is an oral surgeon?
An oral surgeon is a dentist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries to the mouth and face, including removing teeth, if necessary. To be an oral surgeon requires an additional four to six years training in an oral surgeon residency program. To become certified and licensed, oral surgeons must pass written and oral exams by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and must be recertified every ten years.
Oral surgeons work with patients who have facial pain including TMD (Temporo-Mandibular Disorders), impacted teeth, oral cancers and other problems. They also place dental implants, perform reconstructive and corrective surgeries.
