The periodontists at Dental Specialty Centers at Cutler Bay are experts in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and other supporting tissues of your teeth. Periodontal or gum disease is one of the primary causes of tooth loss in people over age 18. It occurs when an invisible film of bacterial plaque accumulates on the tissue and bone that help keep your teeth anchored in place, causing them to become inflamed, irritated or infected. Left unchecked, it can progress to the point where it can endanger your overall health as well as your teeth. Our periodontists employ state-of-the-art procedures and technologies to successfully detect, diagnose and treat this insidious disease to minimize its devastating effects.
What is a periodontist?
Periodontists are dentists who have received an additional three to seven years of formal training in an American Dental Association accredited periodontology residency program. They have also received board certification from the American Board of Periodontology by passing comprehensive written and oral examinations covering all phases of periodontal disease and treatments. Periodontists must be recertified every six years, which requires fulfillment of continuing education requirements and professional acitivities that demonstrate current knowledge and competence in periodontics.
