Severe decay or serious injury can sometimes result in a tooth being damaged or broken off below the gum line. Without enough of the tooth above the gum line to support a filling or crown, any attempt to repair or restore it becomes difficult if not outright impossible. Fortunately, our periodontists can remedy the situation by performing a crown lengthening. Also known as a gum lift, crown lengthening is a relatively common procedure that involves reshaping or removing gum tissue or bone to expose more of the tooth. This provides a more stable base for the final tooth restoration while creating greater symmetry at the gum line.
